GUDGU Lion’s Mane Mushroom Extract

The mushroom I felt before I expected to.

The Day It Was Not Subtle

I didn’t start using Lion’s Mane expecting fireworks.

I expected the usual supplement experience – take the scoop, wait several weeks, wonder whether anything has changed.

That’s not what happened to me.

I noticed a difference almost immediately. My mind felt clearer. My thoughts felt less scattered. It was easier to focus on the job in front of me instead of mentally jumping between everything else that still needed doing.

That experience was real. It’s one of the reasons we got so excited about bringing GUDGU Lion’s Mane to our customers.

It’s also a personal experience, not a promise that everyone will feel the same thing at the same speed. Some people report noticing a change quickly. Others describe a gradual difference after consistent use. Some may notice very little. Human bodies are not photocopiers.

Here’s the interesting part – an immediate effect isn’t completely outside the research. A small 2023 placebo-controlled study found that healthy adults completed one cognitive task more quickly 60 minutes after taking 1.8g of Lion’s Mane. The same study found only tentative longer-term stress findings, and several measures that didn’t improve – so it can’t prove an instant effect for everyone.

A 2025 acute study found no significant overall improvement in cognition or mood, though performance improved on one fine-motor task 90 minutes after a single dose. That leaves us with an honest but genuinely interesting conclusion: an acute response may occur in certain people or for certain mental tasks, but it isn’t yet predictable or guaranteed.

My experience belongs in this story. It shouldn’t be turned into a universal medical claim.

What Is Lion’s Mane?

Lion’s Mane is an edible mushroom known scientifically as Hericium erinaceus. It grows in pale, shaggy clusters with long hanging spines – looking less like an ordinary mushroom and more like a white pom-pom, a small frozen waterfall, or a cloud that’s had an argument with a hairbrush.

Its unusual appearance is only part of why it’s attracted attention. Lion’s Mane contains several groups of naturally occurring compounds, including beta-glucan polysaccharides, hericenones, erinacines, and other phenolic and fungal compounds.

Researchers are especially interested in hericenones and erinacines, because laboratory and animal studies suggest certain Lion’s Mane compounds may interact with pathways involving nerve growth factor and nerve-cell development. These findings are promising – but much of this work has happened in cells or animals, not large human trials.

That distinction matters. A mushroom showing an interesting effect in a laboratory dish isn’t the same as proving one scoop rebuilds the human brain.

What’s in GUDGU Lion’s Mane?

Ingredients: Lion’s Mane Mushroom Extract (Hericium erinaceus), maltodextrin

Suggested serving: 2g, once daily

Per 2g serving
Energy5.2 calories
Protein0.34g
Carbohydrate0.86g
Naturally occurring sugars0.10g
Total fat0.04g
Dietary fibre0.40g
Sodium0.4mg

This serving provides almost no meaningful food energy, so Lion’s Mane isn’t a meal replacement or a source of physical workout fuel. Its purpose is as a functional mushroom ingredient, used within a consistent daily routine.

Note: maltodextrin is a listed ingredient – this product isn’t positioned as filler-free, and the label reflects that honestly.

What Does “Mushroom Extract” Actually Mean?

An extract is made by processing mushroom material to concentrate certain soluble compounds, making them easier to use in a finished powder.

Different Lion’s Mane products can vary considerably – they may use fruiting body, mycelium, or a combination of both; hot-water extraction, alcohol extraction, or dual extraction; different extract strengths; and different carrier ingredients. This means two products both labelled “Lion’s Mane” may not be identical.

For GUDGU to make stronger, more specific potency claims, our raw-material documentation would need to confirm the source (fruiting body, mycelium, or both), the extraction method and ratio, the percentage of beta-glucans, whether hericenones or erinacines were measured, the carrier percentage, and heavy-metal and microbiological testing. Without those results, we can speak confidently about the ingredient and the human research on Lion’s Mane in general – but we won’t print an invented beta-glucan level or extraction ratio.

What May Lion’s Mane Support?

Focus and mental performance. A small trial in healthy young adults found faster performance on a Stroop task 60 minutes after a single 1.8g dose – though the study included only 41 adults and didn’t find improvements across every cognitive measure. A separate 2025 study found no significant overall cognitive improvement after an acute dose, though one individual fine-motor task improved. Together, that suggests Lion’s Mane may support certain aspects of performance in some situations – not that every user will suddenly work faster, remember every password, or enjoy tax paperwork.

Memory. One small Japanese study followed adults with mild cognitive impairment for 16 weeks. Cognitive scores improved at weeks 8, 12 and 16 compared with placebo, but fell again after participants stopped taking the mushroom – a small study whose findings need confirmation in larger, more diverse groups. Another study in older adults reported improvement on one cognitive assessment, with other tests not showing the same clear benefit. Lion’s Mane is genuinely interesting for memory research. It is not a proven treatment for dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or unexplained memory loss.

Stress and mood. The 2023 young-adult trial found a trend toward lower subjective stress after 28 days, though the result narrowly missed the study’s usual threshold for statistical significance. An earlier four-week study in women reported changes in certain measures related to irritation, anxiety and low mood – a small study using biscuits containing Lion’s Mane, so it can’t support broad treatment claims. Lion’s Mane may have a place in stress and mood research. It should not be sold as an antidepressant, anxiety treatment, or replacement for professional mental-health care.

Nervous-system research. Compounds from Lion’s Mane have shown effects involving nerve growth factor, neurite development and nerve-related pathways in laboratory and animal research. This is probably the most exciting part of the Lion’s Mane story – and it’s also where exaggeration becomes dangerous. Laboratory evidence doesn’t prove Lion’s Mane regrows damaged human nerves, prevents neurological disease, or reverses cognitive decline. The science is developing. The marketing shouldn’t run several kilometres ahead of it.

Is Lion’s Mane a Nootropic?

“Nootropic” is a broad marketing term for substances associated with mental performance, memory, alertness or cognition. Lion’s Mane is often described as a natural nootropic because of the research into cognitive performance and nerve-related compounds – reasonable, when used carefully. It doesn’t mean Lion’s Mane has been clinically proven to make every healthy person smarter.

A better description: a functional mushroom being studied for its possible role in focus, cognitive performance, stress and long-term brain health.

Is Lion’s Mane an Adaptogen?

Lion’s Mane is often grouped with adaptogenic mushrooms. “Adaptogen” isn’t a precise nutritional category with one universally agreed test – it generally describes substances believed to help the body respond to physical or psychological stress. Some early research into Lion’s Mane and subjective stress is interesting, but the evidence isn’t strong enough to promise it regulates cortisol or corrects the body’s stress response.

We use “functional mushroom” as the main description. It’s clearer, and easier to stand behind.

Can Lion’s Mane Work Immediately?

It may feel immediate for some people – that was my experience. One small human trial also found faster performance on a specific task 60 minutes after a single dose; a newer study found no overall acute improvement, but did report one task-specific result at 90 minutes. That makes a quick response possible. It doesn’t make it guaranteed.

Possible explanations for a perceived immediate change include a genuine individual response, an effect limited to a particular type of mental task, the routine surrounding the serving itself, caffeine (when taken with coffee), expectation or placebo response, and normal day-to-day changes in sleep, stress and concentration.

A personal experience doesn’t become false because it may include several influences. It just means we should describe it honestly – which is why I’ll say it exactly like this: I personally noticed a clearer, more focused feeling from my first serving of GUDGU Lion’s Mane. It wasn’t subtle for me. Individual experiences will differ.

What Is Brain Fog?

“Brain fog” is a casual term, not a medical diagnosis. People use it to describe poor concentration, forgetfulness, slower thinking, mental fatigue, difficulty finding words, or feeling mentally scattered.

These experiences can have many causes – poor sleep, stress, inadequate food intake, medication effects, hormonal changes, and health conditions among them. Lion’s Mane may become part of someone’s wellness routine, but persistent or worsening cognitive changes deserve proper medical assessment. No mushroom should be used to hide an important symptom.

How Long Should You Use It?

There’s no universally established timetable – human trials have used different products, serving sizes and durations, from a single dose up to four, eight, twelve or sixteen weeks of continuous use.

A practical approach: use the serving shown on the final GUDGU label, take it consistently, and judge your experience over several weeks rather than continually increasing the dose. Pay attention to sleep, stress, caffeine and food intake at the same time. More powder doesn’t automatically create more clarity.

When Should You Take It?

Lion’s Mane can be taken in the morning, with breakfast, in coffee, before a period of concentrated work, in an afternoon smoothie, or in a savoury meal. It isn’t caffeine and shouldn’t behave like a strong stimulant.

Many people prefer taking it in the morning, since that makes it easier to connect the product with a focus routine. If you find it affects your sleep, move it earlier in the day.

How Does It Taste?

Lion’s Mane extract has an earthy mushroom flavour. It works particularly well with coffee, cocoa, chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, banana, milk or yoghurt, fresh mushrooms, garlic, onion, turmeric and black pepper.

It doesn’t need to be swallowed in plain water while everyone pretends the taste is wonderful. A routine becomes far easier to repeat when it actually tastes good.

How to Use GUDGU Lion’s Mane

Use one 2g serving daily, per the current label. Mix it into 200–250ml of coffee, tea, milk, a smoothie, hot chocolate, or water/juice. You can also add it to yoghurt, overnight oats, soup, broth or savoury sauces – blend or whisk thoroughly.

When adding it to hot coffee, stir the powder into a little cool milk or water first, then add the hot coffee gradually. This helps prevent small clumps.

Who Should Take Extra Care?

Avoid Lion’s Mane if you have a known mushroom allergy. Stop using it and seek medical advice if you develop swelling, wheezing, a rash or another possible allergic reaction.

Pregnant or breastfeeding people should seek professional guidance, since good human safety data are limited. People taking chronic medicine – particularly medicine affecting blood clotting or blood glucose – should discuss concentrated mushroom products with a qualified healthcare professional.

The small clinical trials to date generally reported that Lion’s Mane was well tolerated, but they weren’t large or long enough to establish complete safety for every population.

Three GUDGU Lion’s Mane Recipes

Recipe 1: GUDGU Vanilla Lion’s Mane Focus Coffee

For the morning your mind has opened twelve tabs and forgotten where the music is coming from.

Prep time: 4 minutes · Portions: 1 drink

Ingredients:

  • 1 serving (2g) GUDGU Lion’s Mane Mushroom Extract
  • 200ml freshly brewed coffee
  • 50ml low-fat milk or unsweetened plant milk
  • 5ml GUDGU Vanilla Concentrate, or to taste
  • A pinch of GUDGU Cinnamon Powder
  • GUDGU Erythritol or Pure Sucralose, to taste (optional)

Method: Place the Lion’s Mane in a mug, add the milk, and stir until smooth. Slowly pour in the hot coffee while stirring. Add the vanilla concentrate and cinnamon. Taste before adding sweetener.

Estimated nutrition per portion: Energy ~50 kcal (3% DV) · Protein ~3g (6% DV) · Carbohydrate ~5g (2% DV) · Fat ~1g (1% DV) · Calcium ~60mg (5% DV) · Sodium ~45mg (2% DV)

Why this combination works: Coffee provides caffeine, which has a well-established short-term alertness effect. GUDGU Lion’s Mane adds the functional mushroom routine. GUDGU Vanilla and Cinnamon soften its earthy flavour. This combination may feel powerful for some people, but the immediate alertness can’t automatically be credited entirely to Lion’s Mane when coffee’s in the mix too.

Storage: Prepare and enjoy immediately. Don’t leave milk-based coffee standing at room temperature for long periods.

Recipe 2: GUDGU Chocolate Lion’s Mane Protein Smoothie

Chocolate for the mood. Protein for the body. Lion’s Mane for the brain that remembered the smoothie but forgot where it left the phone.

Prep time: 5 minutes · Portions: 1 large smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1 serving (2g) GUDGU Lion’s Mane Mushroom Extract
  • 1 scoop (25g) GUDGU Whey Protein
  • 250ml low-fat milk or unsweetened soy milk
  • 1 small banana
  • 1 tsp GUDGU Cocoa Powder
  • 1 tsp GUDGU Chia Seeds
  • 5ml GUDGU Chocolate or Vanilla Concentrate
  • A pinch of GUDGU Cinnamon Powder
  • A handful of ice

Method: Pour the milk into a blender. Add the banana, Lion’s Mane, whey protein, cocoa powder, chia seeds and cinnamon, then the concentrate and ice. Blend for at least 30 seconds, leave for one minute, then blend briefly again. Add a little more milk if it’s too thick.

Estimated nutrition per portion: Energy ~355 kcal (18% DV) · Protein ~30g (60% DV) · Carbohydrate ~44g (16% DV) · Fat ~8g (10% DV) · Fibre ~7g (25% DV) · Calcium ~330mg (25% DV) · Potassium ~800mg (17% DV) · Magnesium ~80mg (19% DV)

Why this combination works: GUDGU Whey Protein turns the smoothie into a more substantial breakfast or post-training drink. Banana adds carbohydrate and texture. GUDGU Cocoa complements the earthy mushroom flavour. GUDGU Chia Seeds add fibre and thicken the drink. Chocolate or Vanilla Concentrate makes the combination taste deliberate, not medicinal.

Storage: Best enjoyed immediately. Can be refrigerated for up to a day, though the chia seeds will thicken it considerably – shake well before drinking.

Recipe 3: GUDGU Golden Lion’s Mane Mushroom Broth

Not every functional mushroom wants to hide behind banana. Some would prefer to become supper.

Prep time: 8 minutes · Cook time: 15 minutes · Portions: 2

Ingredients:

  • 2 servings (4g) GUDGU Lion’s Mane Mushroom Extract
  • 500ml low-sodium vegetable or chicken stock
  • 150g fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • ½ tsp GUDGU Onion Powder
  • ¼ tsp GUDGU Garlic Powder
  • ¼ tsp GUDGU Turmeric Powder
  • A pinch of GUDGU Black Pepper
  • GUDGU Pink Salt, to taste
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • Fresh parsley, optional

Method: Heat the olive oil in a saucepan and add the fresh mushrooms. Cook 4–5 minutes until lightly browned. Add the onion powder, garlic powder, turmeric and black pepper, and stir for 30 seconds. Pour in the stock and simmer gently for eight minutes. Remove from the heat, whisk in the Lion’s Mane, and taste before adding pink salt. Finish with parsley, if using.

Estimated nutrition per portion: Energy ~70 kcal (4% DV) · Protein ~4g (8% DV) · Carbohydrate ~8g (3% DV) · Fat ~3g (4% DV) · Fibre ~2g (7% DV) · Potassium ~420mg (9% DV) · Sodium: varies according to the stock

Why this combination works: Fresh mushrooms deepen the savoury flavour. GUDGU Onion and Garlic Powder create an easy broth base. GUDGU Turmeric adds warmth and colour. GUDGU Black Pepper sharpens the finished flavour. Adding the Lion’s Mane after removing the pot from direct heat makes it easier to whisk in smoothly.

Storage: Refrigerate in a clean sealed container for up to two days. Reheat gently – don’t repeatedly boil and cool the broth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will GUDGU Lion’s Mane work immediately? It did for me. A small study also found a faster response on one cognitive task 60 minutes after a single dose, while another acute study found no overall improvement but did report one task-specific result at 90 minutes. That makes a quick response possible. It doesn’t make it guaranteed.

Does Lion’s Mane contain caffeine? No. Lion’s Mane is not naturally caffeinated – a Lion’s Mane coffee contains caffeine because of the coffee, not the mushroom.

Will it make me smarter? There’s no evidence that Lion’s Mane raises intelligence. Research has focused on particular measures of cognition, memory, mood, stress and task performance – not general intelligence.

Can it treat memory loss? No. Lion’s Mane is not an approved treatment for memory loss, dementia or neurological disease. New, worsening or unexplained memory changes need medical assessment.

Can I mix it with GUDGU Whey Protein? Yes. GUDGU Whey Protein provides complete protein, Lion’s Mane adds the functional mushroom component, and cocoa, chocolate, vanilla and banana help the flavours work together.

Can I take it without coffee? Yes – use it in smoothies, yoghurt, hot chocolate, tea, soup or broth. This also makes it easier to judge your own experience without caffeine influencing the result.

Does GUDGU Lion’s Mane contain maltodextrin? Yes – maltodextrin appears on the current ingredient list. This is stated clearly on the product page and package, and we won’t claim “no fillers” or “no additives” while it remains part of the formula.

Is it vegan? The listed ingredients are plant and fungal derived. Customers with strict dietary or allergy requirements should still read the final package and manufacturing statement.

Is it gluten-free? The current label carries conflicting statements on this. We won’t guarantee gluten-free status until the finished product and packing process have suitable verification.
